Winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, The Bear throws you straight into the chaos of a Chicago kitchen. It’s loud, messy and intense but beneath the heat is a story about grief, passion and found family. The series has received critical acclaim for its tension, writing, directing, performances, technical quality, and production values. Its character development and accurate portrayal of restaurant kitchens have been singled out by critics and the restaurant industry, as well as its approach to such themes as suicide and trauma.

Shōgun

Shogun, Disney Plus Hotstar
Shogun fires on all cylinders to deliver a television programme of epic proportions.

Shōgun, winner of the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama, blends war, politics and cultural tension in 1600s Japan. When an English sailor washes ashore, he’s pulled into a dangerous clash between rival warlords. Beyond its political intrigue, the FX original masterfully utilises three distinct perspectives of its lead characters, delivering a story that’s fundamentally about life and death. Combined with a remarkable approach to root this period drama in the specificities of Japanese culture, Shogun fires on all cylinders to deliver a television programme of epic proportions.

Paradise

PARADISE – “The Day” – Sinatra and Xavier confront the past, returning to the harrowing day that brought them to Paradise. (Disney/Brian Roedel) STERLING K. BROWN

Paradise is part murder mystery, part political thriller. When a former president is found dead in a quiet, high security community, things quickly spiral into a web of secrets, power plays and buried truths. With an exceptional cast, Paradise brings incredible atmosphere as well as a genuinely captivating mystery throughout the season. While the season finale was rather disappointing compared to the rest of the season, Paradise packs enough to deliver an interesting premise as well as a couple of hours of good television.

Modern Family

Modern Family

With 22 Primetime Emmy Awards across 11 seasons, Modern Family is undoubtedly one of the most successful sitcoms of the 2010s. Following the story of Jay Pritchett and his eclectic family as they deal with the challenges of contemporary life in Los Angeles, Modern Family is presented in a mockumentary style, with the characters frequently speaking directly to the camera in confessional interview segments. Like its namesake, the show depicts a modern-day tight-knit extended family; many episodes are comically based on situations that many families encounter in real life.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Marvel Studios’ second entry on Disney Plus blasts off to an excellent start, as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier opens with a wonderful aerial sequence that sets the stage for what to expect in the series. There’s a lot to enjoy here. Whether it’s the hilariously entertaining chemistry between Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), or Wyatt Russell’s standout debut as John Walker/Captain America, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier aims to deliver more of what you enjoyed from the Captain America movies. Despite a lackluster last third as well as an underwhelming antagonist, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier remains an entertaining watch.
