Elio Is a Cosmic Adventure That Hits the Right Emotional Beats

Pixar’s Elio explores the story of its titular character as he embarks on an intergalactic adventure (or misadventure?) looking for answers bigger than himself. Along the way, he encounters a variety of extraterrestrial life forms ranging from adorable to diabolical, and everything in between. Marking the third sci-fi venture in the ever-expanding filmography of the animation giant, Elio takes off to great effect as it hits the right emotional beats, culminating in a finale that feels earned, albeit a little predictable.

Directed by Adrian Molina, Elio takes its time in setting up its protagonist before blasting off during the second act. Interestingly, the animated feature pulls no punches when it comes to the characterisation of its lead. By portraying Elio (Yonas Kibreab) as immature, and at times selfish, the movie grounds the film through its lead’s humanity. Even when the movie gradually settles into its worldbuilding and expository dialogue, the emotional foundation is always secure as it never waivers its focus on Elio.

Visually, the animated feature looks phenomenal. At this point, it’d be more shocking if a Pixar project looks subpar than otherwise. Incredibly detailed in every frame, Elio boasts establishing shots that look eerily lifelike, a truly incredible feat in computer animatied graphics. Though, Elio continues Pixar’s reluctance to evolve stylistically as it continues to stick to the same visual language first introduced in the original Toy Story.

Admists the cosmic chaos that unfolds in the movie, Elio’s friendship with Glordon (Remy Edgerly) represents the true heart of the movie. While it can feel slow during its early moments, the latest Pixar entry ramps up its momentum once it becomes a buddy comedy. Charming and delightful to watch, there’s a genuinely heartwarming message about connections that’s evident in the narrative of Elio, and it’s the kind of message that’s worthy of beaming across the Milky Way.
