We’re not gonna lie, the inability to head out to the movies due to the coronavirus over the past three months has led us to question our existence here at The Cultured. However, while we were still able to turn our attention towards online streaming services and physical media (we will always remember you Speedy!), Malaysian cinemas were not as fortunate. Having experienced practically no revenue from sales, COVID-19 has proved itself to be disastrous on the entire industry.
Fortunately, thanks to Malaysia’s efforts in flattening the pandemic curve, local cinemas chains were given the green light to resume their operations starting on July 1 after being shuttered for over three months by the Movement Control Order (MCO). Now that the moviegoing scene is getting back to its normal state, we take a look at how cinemas across the country are celebrating their return, as well as the reruns you can look forward to experiencing.
GSC
GSC’s “Summer Blockbuster Strikes Back!” promotion will give audiences an awesome deal of RM5 per movie for reruns, including Train To Busan, Bloodshot, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Venom, Spiderman: Homecoming, Pee Nak 2 and Baaghi 3.
The promotion will start from the 1st to 29th of July 2020. You can buy tickets via the GSC website or the GSC mobile app.
TGV Cinemas
On the other hand, TGV Cinemas will be having a “Break-free movie combo” promotion with new lists of movie reruns every week. The promotion will begin on 1 July 2020, in selected locations. The films will be priced from as low as RM5, depending on the movie. There will also be food and beverage combos starting from RM5.
On top of that, TGV Cinemas will also be offering reruns for Academy Award winning films such as Parasite and Joker (available in IMAX). In addition, films such as Jumanji: The Next Level, Birds of Prey and Hobbs & Shaw are also returning in all their IMAX glory. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) should take note that Spider-Man: Far From Home is returning in the premium format as well, which offers 45 minutes of footage in expanded IMAX aspect ratio.
*TGV’s IMAX reruns are priced at RM10.
