Yes, Malaysian Cinemas, Bring Back the Movie Reruns

Malaysian moviegoers are eating good this month with incredible movie reruns. In September alone, audiences are being treated to three undisputed classics that are bound to leave a lasting impression—whether you’re a first-timer or returning for a repeat viewing. Princess Mononoke, Seven Samurai, and The Sound of Music, will be gracing selected screens across GSC and TGV.

Princess Mononoke (GSC & TGV)

Princess Mononoke

When Studio Ghibli announced the IMAX rerelease of Princess Mononoke, it wasn’t clear whether we’d be getting it here. After all, it was released back in March 2025 in the States. But you know what they say, good things come to those who wait. This September, the IMAX version of Princess Mononoke is finally hitting Malaysian theaters, with fan screenings selling out instantly. (Trust me, I’ve tried.) A culturally significant film of epic proportions, the legacy of Princess Mononoke still stands tall.

Seven Samurai (GSC JFF 2025 Selection)

Seven Samurai

Akira Kurosawa’s magnum opus, which inspired generations of filmmakers, Seven Samurai showcases Japanese cinema at its finest. Clocking in at over three hours, the samurai epic is a monumental achievement in filmmaking. In 2016, Toho undertook an extensive restoration process, giving Kurosawa’s masterpiece the treatment it deserves. Often regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time, it’s almost unbelievable that we finally have the chance to witness Seven Samurai on the big screen.

*Seven Samurai is part of JFF 2025’s lineup. The movie will see a release outside of the Klang Valley after September.

The Sound of Music (GSC)

The Sound of Music

When The Sound of Music was first released in 1965, it surpassed Gone with the Wind to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Beyond its commercial success, the iconic musical went on to dominate the Oscars, winning a total of five Academy Awards—including Best Picture and Best Director. Starting 20th September, GSC will host limited 4K remastered and restored screenings of this classic musical at selected locations in the Klang Valley, for a limited time only. This re-release celebrates the film’s 60th anniversary.

Whether it’s the sweeping samurai battles of Seven Samurai, the environmental majesty of Princess Mononoke, or the timeless melodies of The Sound of Music, these re-releases remind us why classic films deserve a second life on the big screen. In an era dominated by fast-paced blockbusters and endless streaming options, there’s something truly magical about sitting in a dark cinema, rediscovering (or discovering for the first time) films that have shaped generations. So yes, Malaysian cinemas, bring back the movie reruns!
