Blue Beetle Delivers a Superhero That Everyone Can Root For

Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he’s bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that’s capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero, Blue Beetle.

In many ways, Blue Beetle comes across like an amalgamation of the various superhero movies that have populated the big screen over the past decade. On paper, it’s still a formulaic origin story with a one-dimensional villain that ends with an effects-laden finale. However, what separates it from the genre’s weaker outings is its ability to offer a tender and nuanced approach to character within its genre-mandated container.

Blue Beetle

While not reinventing the genre, Blue Beetle puts tremendous heart, emotion, and sincerity into telling its story. As opposed to Hollywood’s usual preference of shallow tokenism, the latest DC superhero film endearingly highlights Latin American culture, diving deep into the importance of family. Through the deeply familial bonds of Jaime and the Reyes family, Blue Beetle is brimmed with real warmth that’s in stark contrast to the usual business of super-suited opponents smashing against one another.

Xolo Maridueña brings the necessary heart to Jaime and it’s often conveyed in the way he cares about honouring his family and getting them out of tough situations. Furthermore, his performance is supported by a wide array of Latino talents that reinforces the authenticity of the narrative and the identity of the film. Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle proves that a smaller scale, more intimate focus on characters approach can still work wonders within the DC universe.

Blue Beetle

All in all, Blue Beetle is at its finest when delivering something wildly original and heartfelt. Although it struggles occasionally to break free from the formulaic trappings of the genre, the movie’s emotional beats, retro style, and genuine chemistry among the actors push this superhero entry into the “good” category. Exuding charm and charisma, Blue Beetle is a heartfelt adventure that successfully delivers a hero that everyone can root for.
